My GOAT Are in the News

On Sunday, the jersey New York Yankees slugger Babe Ruth wore when he famously hit his “called shot” home run in game 3 of the 1932 World Series sold at an auction for $24.12 million. This almost doubled the sale price of the 1952 Topps rookie card of fellow New York Yankees superstar Mickey Mantle which fetched $12.6 million in August 2022, making Ruth’s jersey the highest-priced collectible in sports. In the fifth inning of the game against the Chicago Cubs on October 1, Ruth pointed toward the outfield before smashing a home run to center field. The iconic blast was the last homer Ruth hit in a World Series game and helped the Yankees triumph 7-5.

On Wednesday, defending champion Novak Djokovic recorded his 90th win at the US Open by defeating fellow Serb Laslo Djere in their second-round match. Djokovic, who was already the only player to win 80 matches at each of four Grand Slam tournaments, became the first player to win 90 matches at every Grand Slam. He also became only the fourth tennis player, male or female, to ever reach this milestone at the US Open, after Jimmy Connors, Chris Evert, and Serena Williams.

ESPN+ has begun airing “In the Arena: Serena Williams,” an eight-part documentary that explores her career and evaluates her impact on tennis and society. Although she is one of the most celebrated athletes in history who has been interviewed countless times, Williams has long been reluctant to discuss her private life. Recently, however, she has talked more openly about racial issues and her impact on women’s sports in the HBO documentary “Being Serena” (2018) and through her frequent posting on Instagram. She also served as an executive producer of “King Richard” (2021), the Oscar-winning film about her father, Richard Williams. Directed by Gotham Chopra, the movie includes candid interviews with Williams and sister Venus and Isha Price. The ESPN+ feature is a follow-up to the documentary about another one of my GOAT, “Man in the Arena: Tom Brady” (2021), which is also directed by Chopra.
